"Quanah" "Kwaina"
Quanah was a chief of the Comanche Indians. His father was Peta Nocona ( Chief Nokoni ) and his mother was Cynthia Ann Parker, a white captive. Quanah was also well known as Quanah Parker. In the Comanche language the Indian name Quanah is "Kwaina" meaning "Fragrant". Quanah led his warriors in countless raids against the white settlers trying to end the "on going" slaughter of buffaloes. He reluctantly surrendered and moved to the reservation near Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1875. Concerned about the survival of his people, Quanah encouraged his people to get educated, learn to farm the land and get full United States citizenship papers. For increased income for the Comanches, Quanah persuaded tribesmen to lease their land to white ranchers for grazing. He negotiated certain political and economical terms with the government, however; Quanah retained his honor as a Comanche by not relinquishing his tribal cultures. Through his force and intelligence, Quanah achieved success as a mediator. The city of Quanah, Texas was named in his honor. _________________________________________________________________________________________
