Chief Joseph was the chief of the Nez Percé tribe.  They lived in the Wallowa Valley of Idaho and Oregon.  Last of the great chiefs, he wanted to live among the white settlers in peace.  The government allowed him and his people to remain in the valley; however, the government later decided the valley would be opened to white settlement and the Indians would have to move to the LapwaiReservation.

Desperate to remain, Chief Joseph and his tribe eluded the soldiers numerous advances until they became tired, ill and starving.  Chief Joseph finally surrendered his people to General Nelson Miles on October 8, 1877.
