" Chief Ouray" "Ouray The Arrow"
Chief Ouray was a chief of the Ute Indians. He was half-Apache and half-Uncompahgre Ute. He spoke Spanish, English and several Indian languages fluently. Chief Ouray was a handsome, round faced, sharp-eyed chief. Government officials, by unanimous choice, referred to him as "Ouray the Arrow" for the chief of the Utes. Chief Ouray settled disputes between the Indians and white settlers. He was sophisticated enough that he reported Utes' case to newspaper reporters when politicians tried to outsmart him. Chief Ouray was so shrewd that the government wasn't able to confuse him about land boundaries for the land the Utes were to receive in western Colorado. Chief Ouray negotiated the first treaty between the Utes and the U.S. Government over land boundaries. The Utes received a large amount of land for reservations that had meadows and western slope forest, which was a lot less land than they had before. In the treaty, were clauses to keep miners and settlers off the land. Chief Ouray, who was to remain head chief at request from government officials, in agreement with other chiefs, accepted the U.S. Government's offer to become part of the establishment. This treaty enabled the Utes to be at peace. ________________________________________________________
